What Is Tuna Poke?

Tuna poke is a traditional Hawaiian seafood dish made from bite-sized cubes of raw tuna that are marinated in ingredients such as soy sauce, sesame oil, green onions, sea salt, and other seasonings. The word “poke” means “to slice” or “cut crosswise” in Hawaiian, referring to the way the fish is prepared. Fresh tuna is the most popular choice because of its firm texture, rich flavor, and ability to absorb the savory marinade while still highlighting the natural taste of the fish.

Originally enjoyed as a simple fisherman’s dish in Hawaii, tuna poke has become popular worldwide and is often served as an appetizer, snack, or main course. While poke can be eaten on its own, it is also commonly served over rice as a poke bowl with toppings like avocado, cucumber, edamame, seaweed salad, and sesame seeds. The combination of fresh raw tuna, flavorful seasonings, and crisp vegetables creates a light, refreshing dish that showcases the quality of the fish.

Blackfin Tuna Poke Recipe

This is a recipe that I have been making for several years now! I have always been a fan of Poke Bowls ever since I first had one, but it wasn’t until 2020 that I started catching my own tuna and making my own. It’s a very simple recipe to make, and I like it because it uses local Florida oranges.

Poke is one of those things that you can experiment with and come up with different recipes that encompass different flavors. Usually when I’m experimenting, I try to focus on maintaining a balance between sweet and savory, while adding in some additional depths of flavor. This blackfin tuna poke recipe would also go great on top of nachos like the picture above!

How I Got This Blackfin Tuna

I actually got this particular Blackfin Tuna when I was out on my kayak off of Dania Beach. I originally had gone out to go spearfishing and after diving for a few hours and only shooting one fish, my buddy who was on his Jet Ski came and met up with me to go out deeper and do some jigging.

I paddled out to 400 feet and he let me borrow one of his rods since I didn’t have mine with me and I ended up hooking up on this fish after about 45 minutes. It had been awhile since I caught one of these on a kayak because when I was living in the Florida Keys you have to go out a lot further so a kayak is pretty much out of the equation. I was so excited I was going to be able to make this blackfin tuna poke bowl recipe!

Yes, this poke should be good for a few days after making it. The flavor tends to develop even more the longer it soaks in the marinade. A lot of times I will just leave a big batch in the fridge during the week and eat it for lunch with some sushi rice!
