How I Got This Fish
On day 2 of my spearfishing adventure in the Poipu area of Kauai, I had to make up for a terrible effort the day before. Getting out early in the morning I thought I would see tons of fish, but it was a ghost town until I was out about 100 yards from shore. Then it was on…or so I thought. I had a little SpearPro 50 that I was able to put in my suitcase…but it is terrible. The first 15-20 fish I shot at got nowhere close to hitting them. This gun is beyond inaccurate, but, I needed redemption for the day before.

While I did get a small To’au (black tailed snapper-invasive), I did need to get some fish to take home for the family. Then I swam upon schools of Kole and menpachi…perfect! Perfect until I remembered I have a crappy gun that can barely hit a target and especially small fish that dart around. After missing many more shots I decided to take one last chance on an overhang that held a bunch of fish of all types.

So, I relax, hold my breath and drop down about 18 feet and laid down below the ledge. I take aim at a big snapper and my eye catches something much bigger on a wall…a big scorpionfish. Coming to the end of my breath, I have to make a serious decision because these things have so many venomous spines, and on low breath I can’t afford to fight it, and this gun is just wildly inaccurate. No time left, I moved closer…shot! The fish peels off the wall with a complete stone shot and now it is time to swim back with my beautiful red scorpionfish on the spear!!! No way it is going on the fish stringer!
